Positive and Negatives: Imagination, Role Play, Alternate Personas

What are the potential benefits and drawbacks of engaging in repeated imagination, roleplay, or alternate personas on a weekly basis? Daily? Hourly?

What about the extent? Ranging from full dissociation from the present moment (fully in your head), or feeling more yourself when dressing up/acting than "in your own skin"?

Depending on your own personality and the alternate persona, perhaps it could be a form of cognitive behavioral therapy because it gets you to think/act differently than you normally would. On the other hand, cognitive dissonance is a thing and it could have some negative effect on the shadow self. I wonder what method actors would say about it, the ones that go full-time into their character. I've ad-libbed, and it's kinda hard for me to stay in character lol but I've met some people who get REALLY into it.

Great points on the positives of thinking/acting outside of the usual, and I think you're right about possible negatives too.

Method actors definitely fall under this too. I've seen mixed reactions and clips from them outside the shoots. It brings a whole other level to the performance but blurs lines.
